only 25% they say, you know, say the same for boehner. we do have one more poll, this is really the big kahuna, shows 65% believe the voters gave the president a mandate to raise tax rates on the wealthy. so dana bash, given all of that, do we have any idea what the republican calculus is here and apparently hardening now their position on the taxes? >> reporter: i'm not really sure if in reality their position is hardening on raising -- or keeping tax cuts in place for the wealthiest americans. it may have been on paper in the proposal, certainly departments are using that today. that is the story line of the day. democrats are using it politically against republicans. but i talked to so many republicans, trent franks is one of them, who kind of shrugged their shoulders and say they understand that they don't have leverage as you just illustrated in that poll that the democrats have leverage, for a number of reasons, whether it is the amount of -- that the president won by, politically, or just the substance of this argument, the democra

boehner says $800 billion. in the olden days they would just split the different at 1.2 trillion, come up with some number in between. is that likely this time? >> well, that's the number that has been banting around. it does seem like an obvious ending point for the president on revenue. but the speaker is looking, don't forget, for a different number on cuts. what will the president do on spending cuts. and today senator daughter bin said thdurbin would not be ableo increase the retirement age from medicare and that was something of a blow for the gop. they were surprised to hear that. the white house in the briefing said that's not true. that's not a position the white house has ado. so different sides on that position. probably speaker boehner will want to hear what the president has to say on that, wolf. >> thanksery much. stay on top of i and let us know when you hear from speaker boehner. >>> the other top story we're following right now, the bombshell announcement a little while ago that susan rice is w

he says then -- seems to be where boehner is now. raise tax revenue capping deductions, limiting loopholes, not raising tax rates. >> if you listen to the president's entire statement he said as part of a larger tax reform proposal. the fact is you can't get the revenues that are necessary simply by eliminating deductions, unless you want to whack the middle class, and that's not something we can afford to do now. let's also make the point, wolf, that everyone in america will benefit if we extend the tax cuts for, incomes under $250,000. you get the tax cut the first $250,000. but if we're going to deal with the debt problem, we have to do it in a balanced way. raising rates is part of what we need to do. >> one of the things republicans would tell you, when we created the bush tax cuts for everyone, including the wealthy, government revenues went up from 1.8 trillion to 2.5 trillion. >> 2001 and 2003? >> over a four-year period after bush tax cuts were put in place. why not stay with that, keep the economy growing. that's $700 billi

a year ago, eric cantor was measuring the curtains in boehner's office, but i think now, boehner knows he's just got to get this done, suffer through, the republicans will take the hit if this doesn't happen and they don't need that kind of bad press. it will just make obama all the more powerful heading into his reinauguration. >> all right. both of you guys seem glass half-fullish on this. bottom line, ron first, deal or no deal? >> bottom line, i don't think the president wants to go over the cliff, because he'll be giving an inaugural address with the country in fiscal shambles. and the president still is the commander in chief, the leader of our country. and if he presides over this, a lot of mud is going to splash up on him too. i think we'll be able to get this deal done, but, again, the devil's in the details. >> tight on time, jason, deal or no deal? >> we're going to get a deal, right at the end of the year, everyone's happy, unemployment will keep coming, and we will not hit the fiscal cliff. >> all right, gentleman, thank you for your insight. we'll see if there'll be a dea
